Cannibal Racism

If I was in 1975 south africa and a policeman asked me to leave a private institution because of my color.. I would understand... doesn't make it right.. but I'd know where he is coming from. When I am in my country, doing no wrong, and someone that shares my color and my language starts feeling uncomfortable because of my presence... we sort of have a problem.

Its not like I have a striking story to share.. its just a wierd encounter that happens from time to time. I was at a party organized by some friends that are kicking off a new salsa class on the island.. and they invited me to celebrate at a higher end night club, which they reserved for the occasion. I was there with my merry friends having a good time.. half of us was on the dance floor and the other half was socializing.. I got up to do whatever I got up to do... and the club's lebanonise manager came up to me and said "excuse me.. this is a private section." I wouldn't have disclosed the manager's nationality if the case was different... but it was really wierd.. is it because of my complexion that I couldnt possibly have white friends? I mean.. what is he saying exactly? You're Bahraini.. stick to your halwa, bukhoor, and shisha; and leave the salsa parties to others? Or is he saying you're a local, so all I expect from you is trouble?

After I told him that I was invited to the private event.. he apologized with a half heart.

Why do we look down on each other? Why do we trust a foreign doctor more than a local? Prefer to hire someone from abroad when our neighbor is readily available? Do we not believe in ourselves to the point that anyone other than ourselves is alluringly exotic?

I think everyone (Khaleeji) had to go through this. I encoutered this racism in Dubai when I wanted to get into a restaurant/disco to meet with business associates, and the funny thing I was stopped from going in by an Indian midget - I kid you not, wallahulatheem! - no disrespect for Indians or midgets of course, but that incident pissed me off. I pushed past him of course and he came rolling after me on his short legs together with a couple of his coleagues.. you don't want to know what happened in between, but the real thing that pissed me off was them realising that I WAS a khaleeji rather than an Egyptian!

Now sort out how many levesl the above paragraph has in racism, and how many there are in there too that is just pathetic.

I have friends who tried to get into a number of bars and discos here in Bahrain and were refused entry because they were Bahraini...

We have a certain level of freedom that allows people to go to bars if they want to. I hope you don't have a problem with that?

Unless in Bahrain a bar means something else, yes, as a matter of fact, I do have a problem with that.

I wasn't attacking you personally, I was only surprised that there are bars in Bahrain. The common understanding of what a bar is is a place where alcohol is consumed. If that is not how bars operate in Bahrain then a simple mentioning of so would have sufficed and there was no need of you to become offensive.

Muslims are not divided between two camps, either a terrorist or a secular drunkard. You could be a Muslim without being a terrorist and I would have expected you to know that.

No matter.

Wait a minute, you're the one who said you had a problem with it mate!

As far as I can tell, The Joker merely prescribed a common solution that seems all the rage among those "who would like to re-establish the Caliphate".

You can observe your faith without having the real world hidden from you, but we would have expected you to know that.

Oh, and I must stress again that you could be a drunkard without be secular, but of course you wouldn't know anything about that...

"Cannibal Racism"

There is a group of us who goes to a very popular spot in Seef area every weekend to listen and dance to the Cuban Band.
In our group, just to name a few of the nationalities, we have a Brazilians, Australians, Mexicans & Bahrainis.
A few weeks ago my Bahraini friends were stopped at the door by the security and were told that they couldn't come in because they only go there to dance and that they don't spend any $$$$.
that left us all outraged...yes we do go there to dance and we leave there very merry after spending a lot of our $$ on drinks and snacks;
funny enough last week they let all our non bahraini friends in and when our Bahraini friends arrived they stopped them again at the door saying that the place was full and for them to come back at 11.30pm.... what a load of crap!
(no offence to saudis)
They do let drunken Saudi's in!
So what is wrong with letting our Bahraini friends in?

This place has been our weekend spot for the past 2 years, they all know us and they know that we spend money there.

After reading your blog about cannibal racism we have realized that the only reason our bahraini friends are not allowed in is simply because they are "Bahrainis" they are darker than I am.

Hilmi seems to be making the point that a Muslim dominated society should be drawing the line a wee bit before it comes to allowing alcohol drinking halls in their communities. The sad truth is a compromise is made on a clearcut principle to bring dollars to those with connections.

Being a drinker of liquer drinks means you are pursueing secular values more than Islamic ones. Are you then a Muslim in the important sence of the word? The values of the West may be interesting to those who are a bit rebellious, but drinking liquer ain't acceptible for any Muslim.
